Greeting from the Director

Lee Gil Ya Cancer & Diabetes Institute was opened on May 9, 2008. In 2008, Gil Hospital was in its 50th year and Medical School was in its 10th anniversary. Until that time, Hospitals and Medical Schools have been devoted mainly to patient care and education, but realizing that without research, it is not possible for the Hospital and Medical School to achieve the innovative development, they have established Lee Gil Ya Cancer & Diabetes Institute.

The Institute started with the following ambitions.

First, focusing only on the research on cancer and diabetes considering our reality
Second, participating in education but focusing only on research
Third, building the best facilities and equipment to enable all research for cancer and diabetes

This Iinstitute is proud of its best facilities and equipment in Korea. These are:
-The Animal Center, a 1,000-square-foot area that can accommodate 30,000 rodents accredited by AAALAC International
-The Korea's first characterization center for mouse metabolism, the largest center of this kind in Asia.
-9.4T MRI which can measure animal metabolic status in a living state
-75 research benches and more than 500 kinds of expensive facilities and equipment, totaling 1,000 of items.

This Institute showed its competence by playing a key role in the most prestigious government project competition in which the Gil Hospital won the project as the third place among the 10 hospitals selected from the competition. The project is called the Research-Centered Hospital, a 9 year government project for which 40 university hospitals were competing for 10 slots. It has established itself as the core of research capability of the hospital and Gil Hospital.

With the research capability established, the Institute has decided to contribute to the development human resource. To this end, the professors who were engaged only in research were allowed to participate in education in undergraduate in medical school and in graduate school. For graduate education, in March, 2016, the Institute opened the program for Health Sciences and Technology which has three majors: medical life sciences, brain sciences, and medical biotechnology.

Also, in order to expand the benefits of our excellent facilities, the Institute has opened up to professors in related fields such as pharmacy, life science as well as medicine. As a result, now, the Institute becomes a convergence research center where scientists of different fields are intermingling for research.

Over time, the Institute is expanding the research area from Cancer and Diabetes to other diseases such as inflammation, sepsis so forth, looking forward to gathering of scientists of diverse areas

Students and professors who are interested in medical life research!
